How do I get started training in Ki Aikido - ShinShin Toitsu Aikido (Aikido with mind and body coordinated)?

The quickest way is to stop by the dojo before one of our regular classes (see Practice Times to the left), sign the waiver, pay dues (or sign up for one of our promotional offers) and join the class. Please allow approximately 20 to 30 minutes to fill out the paperwork, change clothes, and stretch/warm up before class. See below for what to wear.

If you have questions, feel free to call or email the dojo (under 'Contact Us' to the left) with your questions.

Which classes can I attend when starting?

Everyone, regardless of training experience, is welcome to participate in any of our classes. If a student would prefer to practice with other beginners and lower ranked students, we offer Beginners Classes on Tuesday nights. These classes focus on the basics (ukemi, ki extension, techniques for the first exam, etc) and prepare the student for the other classes and testing. These classes are not required for participation in our other classes or testing.

In other classes an experienced student will be asked to assist a beginner in learning the basics (how to roll, discuss the basics of ki and ki extension, etc). Once you are able to take forward and backwards rolls (ukemi, or falls), you will then learn at your own pace in our classes.

If you do not want to get on the mat right away, you are more than welcome to come and watch a class, or as many as you prefer, and ask questions or comments of the instructor or students (before or after class please). Just stop on by, let one of our students or instructors know you are a first time visitor, and they will show you our dojo video, the dojo itself, and answer any questions you may have about the dojo or ki aikido.

Release of Liability

New students must sign the dojo Release of Liability form prior to first getting on the mat.

Age Requirements

We are currently accepting students 14 years of age or older. Younger students may be accepted after an interview with our chief instructor. Students under age 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian before being allowed to practice on the mat.

What to wear

Aikido techniques involve grabbing the wrists, arms, and shoulders, as well as kneeling and rolling on the mat. Loose fitting, durable shirt & sweat pants, or white judo/karate dogi are recommended. Shorts are not recommended.
